30 Minute Concept

In a pair we chose a brief in where we had 30 minutes to come up ideas and a final concept. Having our brief as cities & Puzzles in which we had to make a game and showcase our ideas on a wall we came up with the obvious Ideas of having some sort of a puzzled game about cities.
some of our Ideas we came up with:
- Large 3D square picturesque puzzle of the wall of a image of the city in which the person had to play in order to figure out which city it is
- Massive 3D jigsaw on the wall
- Digital interactive game where your in control and find yourself on a map and you find you way around
- Cities with the wrong landmarks for the player to solve the puzzle and locate the correct landmarks with the correct city

We decided to go with the large picturesque game and play with the rules e.g. timing or movement restrictions to make the play of the game interesting we could limit the player with 3 minutes and after the time's over the picturesque moves to jumble up the picture again.

However after some group discussion we felt it was to simple and straightforward ideas we wanted to  create something with more depth and thought.

We then came across a idea of having a app for people who were lost to find their way back or locate themselves so they have a idea of where they are. We called the app 'Puzzled', We have pinpoints like codes engraved on the sides of building or any source of object in the different areas around the city e.g. sides of buildings, trees, walls etc.. These pinpoints are located on the map of the app which then locates both the person and these pinpoints on the app in which the person has to 'play' some sort of a puzzle game to get to the nearest pinpoint. At the pinpoint will be a code in which the person then enters the code into the app for the app to inform the person about the place nearest transport, hotels, Restaurant's etc...

This short exercise helped me to improve my skills in working in a short scale time under pressure to meet a deadline. This shows me and motivates me to say I could always complete my work set to a certain deadline. It also helped and boost my confidence skills and the skills which I acquired in tackling any brief.

Cereal box Development

After doing some rough sketches of my Design layout for the cereal box I had to create the whole final design digitally using Adobe Illustrator, so I imported my final Sketch into the software.

For the precise measurements of the Cereal box I used this existing template and worked on top it, locking this into the background layer.

Turning the opacity down for the cereal template making it easier to focus on my design. I create a grid box over the front design to create the base and also outline for my design. Here I've imported the image and working on top of that using the pen-tool I begin to create my character on different layers.

Using the pen-tool I drew all the elements to my composition. For the cereal bowls I experimented with the different brush strokes and really liked this sharp and edgy effect. I had some problem in trying to draw the big splashes which i had to repeat this step several times to try and get it near enough perfect which was a small challenge as the curves weren't easy to work with.

Experimenting with the type I felt the type was to flat and wasn't as sharp enough. So I added a dark purple shadow same colour as the Background to contrast against the white and yellow, with a thick black stroke for the cartoon anime effect. Also here I experimented with shadows and lighting on the octopus and the cereal bowls to add a perspective and give the illustrations life.
Looking at colour I do a small experimentation to see what colour my Octopus would stand out in and be the most effective. So I go a slightly Lighter shade of purple so it has a contrast between light and dark of the purples.
I liked this colour experimentation however didn't feel like it come together as one piece as there's too many colours being used making it look busy which takes your attention of the whole design as it isn't eye-catching enough.
Using a darker shade for the octopus doesn't work well as it doesn't stand out as a individual element rather blends in with the background. Lighter subtle shades would be much ideal.
Using a lighter subtle shade I went with the orange, I liked how the octopus as a singular element looked however the colour crashed with the colour of the type and cereal bowls.
My Final design for the colours was to go with the contrast of the light and dark shade of purple which I feel worked well as a whole piece along with the bright yellow.

Adding Detail to my Illustration I created small hexagon Octo's applying a light stoke and inserting several into the cereal bowls as swell as a subtle colour for the milk.

To add a image of the actual cereal I decided to add the Octo's in the empty white space and experimented with the size of the Octo to show distance and perspective.  Once I finished my design Using rulers and the template as my guide I created my Cereal Net over the top using the line tool.

Completing the net outline I also worked on the back of the box cover using the same style in type and illustration go the cereal and octopus tentacle. I also used the same colours as the front for it to come together as one. I created a small interactive game using the square and line tool, linking the maze to my cereal.

The finished net of the cereal box adding the ingredients, barcode, calorie intake  and all the nutrients information.

Logo Design

Logo is the start of a new brand to create a identity, it works as a communicator for the company or organisation to leave a mark. This can consist of a symbol, a mark or a letter. The simple the better it is to remember.

- Think about what the Font says
- Think about the colour - (colour psychology) - emotion
- Symbol or name - which makes more of a impact - emotion/ feelings/  atmosphere

Rules

- Keep it simple
- Idea led design (Ideas/ concepts)
- Don't try something you can't do
- One Idea in one logo is enough (U.S.P)
- Know the audience don't design for you
- Simple colours (1/2, no gradients etc...)
- Type is crucial  (make it work)
- Do loads of option (more designs- more room for improvement)
- Remember size ratio
- Research the client
- How can it develop (where can it be seen, Brand Identity)

Sketches

Typography

To develop the typography further I had created a different type and technique for one of my sentence. I used abstract lines to show the freedom of thought but also the confusion between the lines and letter itself. Making the scale larger as I used a A4 piece for one whole letter each.

To develop this I created another type which I edited digitally. Using geometric shapes again but also adding confusion into the technique. I made this text seem like some sort of a code but still readable. I added drop shadow effects, gradients and emboss effect just to see the impact it creates on the text. I love the last experiment as it creates the effect of a code engraved into something.
